Cities and regions

Cities are never finished and knowledge about cities is never complete. It is crucial that we invest in updating, enriching and enhancing our urban knowledge. Especially when it comes to sustainability. The basis of urban sustainability challenges are the dense, diverse and dynamic populations, activities and spatial configurations.

We address the interaction between social, economic and ecological dimensions of urban sustainability and circularity. Our work is centered around Sustainable Development Goal 11 of the United Nations. This SDG focuses on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

The challenge is to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

'Cities and regions' facilitates practice oriented research and education that goes beyond sectoral and disciplinary boundaries. We bring researchers, students and various stakeholders from urban practice together to work on innovative, inter- and transdisciplinary approaches.

We offer an entry point for those who want to collaborate with LDE-researchers and students: to develop and share knowledge, innovative methods and approaches. We welcome your contribution. We can connect you to others who are passionate about innovating in impactful urban knowledge production for the sake of more sustainable cities.

Our knowledge

In the Cities Hub Leiden University, Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam join forces. These three universities have a strong track record in addressing circularity from an ecological, social and  technical perspective, including material and resource flows. The Cities Hub builds on this expertise. We continue to develop new avenues within and across academia for expanding and deepening urban sustainability knowledge.
