About the Sustainable Business Battle Leiden - The Hague 2017

During the Sustainable Business Battle (SBB), ten teams of three to four students will battle against one another to find the most innovative yet implementable solution for challenges that five organisations face. This year the five organisations, whose cases the teams will be working on, are Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland, Koninklijke Horeca Nederland, DUWO, Vliko-renewi, Leiden University and the municipality of Leiden.

The Training Day

After a successful Kick-off, we can look forward to the Training Day. On the Training Day the focus will be on finding a solution for the case. Firstly, you will receive lectures from renowned professors from Leiden in the field of sustainability. They will provide you with the necessary knowledge about sustainability that should help you with your case. In the afternoon Rabobank will facilitate workshops. After this afternoon you should be able to take home 1 to 2 ideas to further work on before the Semi-Final.

Trainings

René Kleijn Uni LeidenDr. René Kleijn
Dr. René Kleijn will be giving one of the workshops on sustainability. As associate professor at the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) and Director of Education of the joint Leiden Delft master programme Industrial ecology, he is highly influential in education on the topic of sustainability. He is currently working on projects related the material constraints of novel (energy) technologies, circular economy, eco-innovation and resilient supply chains.

Arnold Tukker CMLProf. Dr. Arnold Tukker
Prof. Dr. Arnold Tukker will give a lecture on sustainability. Arnold Tukker, the godfather of sustainability at Leiden University, is the director of Environmental Sciences (CML). Before this he was the Business Line manager Societal Innovation and Economy at TNO. He is currently doing a lot of work on projects concerning resource efficiency. Besides this he is chair of the board of Leiden – Delft – Erasmus Centre for Sustainability.

Erik van DamErik van Dam
Erik van Dam is founding partner at "Triple Value Strategy consulting", a leading Dutch consultancy firm that aligns sustainability and business strategy. He focuses on the development and deployment of business strategies to create sustainable value for his customers. He will provide students with a workshop during the Training Day about sustainable entrepreneurship.

RabobankRabobank
Rabobank will be facilitating the trainings done by Friskijkers in the afternoon. These trainings will help the teams through the following three steps: Idea realisation, in which the teams will brainstorm about solution to the defined problem; Validation, in which they are coached on how to control that the solution they are working on for the case is the right approach for the current situation, and not outdated; And making it a good business model with the help of the business model canvas, to help straighten out their ideas and prepare for the pitch.
