Greenport Hub organises Hackathon in World Horti Centre

On Thursday, December 14, the Greenport Hub will organise a 30-hour hackathon at the World Horti Center in Naaldwijk. During the hackathon, 40 international students will spend two days and one night working on a business case brought forwards by companies from the horticultural sector. The solutions of the students should lead to better business performance at the companies.

The 40 students are part of the Bachelor Honours Programme Lessons Learned from Silicon Valley of the Erasmus, Rotterdam School of Management. During the course, students will collect broad and in-depth knowledge and insights around strategic entrepreneurship, innovation management and clustering from renowned faculty (at RSM) and industry experts in Silicon Valley.

It is a positive sign that the programme contains a hackathon about business cases from the horticultural sector. It emphasises how important the role of this sector is and will be in the new economy. It is a dynamic sector full of potentials and challenges. What to think of bio-based materials in a circular economy? Or the huge challenge in feeding mega cities and digitalisation in the greenhouses? And is it possible to become CO2 neutral with greenhouses?

Businesses like Rijk Zwaan, Zentoo, Eminent and Forever Plants will bring their business cases to the hackathon. They will present their challenges to the students on 14 December. The students will have 30 hours to come up with a solution and they will present this solution on 15 December.

The Greenport Hub is founded in 2017. It is for the first time that the Leiden University, Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam are a developing research programme focused on the horticulture sector. In the Greenport Hub we work together with companies, students and scientists.
